Sri Lanka’s food culture is one of the most distinctive in Asia – spice-complex, coconut-rich, deeply regional, and almost entirely unknown outside the island. This package uses culinary encounters as the thread that connects the journey’s cultural, highland, and coastal chapters, creating a Sri Lanka experience built as much around what you eat and learn about as what you see.

Day 01
Colombo - First Taste of the Island

An arrival in Colombo with an evening curated dining introduction to Sri Lankan cuisine – hoppers, string hoppers, jackfruit curry, devilled prawns, and the particular flavour of a cooking tradition built on six centuries of spice trade history.

Day 02
Sigiriya Drive & Evening Cooking Experience

The drive to Sigiriya through rural Sri Lanka, arriving for a late afternoon cooking experience with a local family – fresh ingredients sourced from the village, wood fire cooking, and a dinner prepared and eaten together that provides the most direct possible introduction to Sri Lankan home cooking.

Day 03
Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Polonnaruwa Ancient City

Morning ascent of Sigiriya and afternoon exploration of Polonnaruwa – the cultural heritage chapter of the journey balanced against the culinary one.

Day 04
Matale Spice Garden & Kandy Temple - Culinary Heritage Day

The drive to Kandy via Matale’s spice-producing region introduces the raw materials of Sri Lankan cooking – cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, nutmeg, and the medicinal herbs that give the island’s cuisine its extraordinary complexity. An evening visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy provides the cultural counterpoint.

Day 05
Kandy Morning Market & Tea Country Highlands

A morning visit to the Kandy produce market – one of the island’s most vivid and direct encounters with Sri Lankan food culture, where fresh tropical produce, dried spices, and Maldive fish line the stalls – before the highland drive through tea country to Nuwara Eliya.

Day 06
Tea Estate Tasting & Highland Viewpoints

A full day focused on Ceylon tea – estate walk, factory tour, guided comparative tasting, and the highland landscape that produces what many consider the world’s finest black tea.

Day 07
Scenic Train to Ella & Mountain Dining

The hill country train journey to Ella, followed by an evening in the village’s excellent cafe and restaurant scene – small, independently run, and producing some surprisingly good food in an atmospheric highland setting.

Day 08
South Coast Drive & Coastal Food Culture Arrival

The drive from Ella to the south coast – arriving at a destination known for its seafood and coastal dining culture.

Day 09
South Coast Leisure & Culinary Focus

A full coastal day – morning fish market if available, long seafood lunch, afternoon beach leisure, and the easy pleasure of eating well by the ocean in Sri Lanka’s most food-conscious coastal region.
